Death of Onesh Subasinghe: If you don’t let me go, I will kill you - servant overhears Onesh’s wife

The CID informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis that the maid who worked at businessman Onesh Subasinghe’s house in a statement had said she heard Subasinghe’s wife saying to him “I can’t eat Sri Lankan food. I can’t stay here. I want to go back to my country. If you don’t let me go, I will kill you.” 

The CID in its ‘B’ report related to the investigation of a complaint made regarding the death of 45-year-old businessman Onesh Subasinghe, Managing Director of OPEX Holdings in Indonesia reported to the court that they initiated an investigation following a complaint made by Subash Subasinghe, brother of the deceased businessman. Statements taken from his five servants were also reported.   


According to Subhash Subasinghe’s statement, his brother was married to a Brazilian woman named Rosalia Silva and they had a four-year-old daughter. He further said that they were living in a flat in Rosmead Place, Colombo.   
Shyam Lal Aravinda, brother-in-law of the deceased giving a statement said that Onesh was fighting with his wife and he had plans to divorce her.   


Devadasa Megala Kanthi, a maid in the deceased’s house in her statement said that Onesh’s wife was often quarreling with her husband and used to say “ I can’t eat Sri Lankan food. I can’t stay here. I want to go back to my country. If you don’t let me go, I will kill you.”.   


She further said that Onesh one day asked her and another servant to keep an eye on his wife as she had plans to escape with the child.   


Devage Pushparani, another servant in the house confirmed that she too heard her mistress threatening to kill Onesh one day.   


An investigation has been launched to find whether this murder was planned in Sri Lanka and an offence was carried out as per Paragraph 32 of the Penal Code.  (Nimanthi Ranasinghe)
