Details of Merc driver emerge, police continue search to nab him

The Kollupitiya police are yet to arrest the driver of the Mercedes car which was involved in a fatal accident in Kollupitiya last morning while returning from a night club.

A 58 year-old man had died when a luxury car (Mercedes) returning from a night club at R. A. De Mel Mawatha, Colombo smashed against a three wheeler in Kollupitiya on Saturday morning.

Investigation revealed that the driver was returning to his room at the Cinnamon Lakeside hotel when the accident took place at around 6.15 a.m on Saturday. The three-wheeler driver, who was seriously injured in the accident, died on admission to the Colombo National Hospital.

The deceased was a resident of Kahathuduwa, Polgasowita. Police said three women and another man were in the car at the time of the accident and the two women aged 29 and 31 were also injured and admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. 

It was reported that the suspect driver had two addresses, one in Dehiwala and another in Wellampitiya. However, he was staying in a luxury room at the leading Colombo hotel.

Police said the suspect was partying from Friday evening till around 5 a.m on Saturday at the club and three women who were inside the car at the time of the accident met him at the night club.

Following the accident, a video showing a couple of onlookers assaulting a female passenger of the car after the accident had gone viral on social media.  

The Kollupitiya Police who are investigating the incident said that investigation has also been launched to identify those who assaulted the passenger saying that the law cannot be taken into anyone's hands.

Police said they have taken two women into custody who were reportedly engaged in road cleaning on charges of assaulting a female passenger of the car involved in the accident. The police are probing to arrest another female who was seen assaulting the passenger.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
