Education Minister Susil Premajayantha is on a visit to Canada to participate at the 40th meeting of the Board of Governors of the 'Commonwealth of Learning (COL)', which takes place in Vancouver, Canada on June 28 and 29.
On his way to Canada, the Minister engaged in discussions with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington, United States of America today (26) to address matters related to the education sector in Sri Lanka. The Commonwealth Institute of Learning fully sponsored this trip.
The COL is an international organization with its headquarters in Canada. It was established by the Commonwealth Heads of Government to promote the development and sharing of open learning and distance education resources and technologies.
Minister Premajayantha is the Asian regional representative of the body of governors of this institution. The support provided by the 'Commonwealth of Learning' will be instrumental in enhancing access to quality education in Sri Lanka.
The progress of USAID assistance to Sri Lanka was reviewed, and new approaches were explored to strengthen existing partnerships during the discussions held today (June 26) between USAID and the Minister.
USAID, a long-term development partner of Sri Lanka, supports sustainable development initiatives in the country and these discussions have significantly contributed to the education sector in Sri Lanka, particularly with regards to the continuation of the school mid-day meal programme.
