Colombo, Dec.15 (Daily Mirror) - The reason behind the increase in egg prices in the local market is due to the collection and stocking of eggs for use in bakery and biscuits production targeting the Christmas season, the All Island Egg Producers' Association (AIEPA) said.

AIEPA treasurer Wijeya Alwis told the Daily Mirror that at least 20 percent of the chickens from every poultry farm have died due to the current rainy weather and therefore egg production has decreased.

"Many large-scale and small-scale bakeries and biscuit companies have tightened their egg stocks, targeting increasing their productions during the holiday season. The collecting of egg stocks started from November 15," he said.

Therefore, a huge shortage has been created in the local market, and the price of an egg has increased to Rs. 62 now.

"This current egg shortage was not created by the egg producers, but this situation is usually create during the festive seasons. However, soon after the festive season the egg prices will drop to a maximum of around Rs. 40 each," the association treasurer added.
