State Minister of Finance Eran Wickramaratne yesterday lodged a complaint with the Elections Commission (EC) and the IGP with regard to a twitter message warning of a bomb attack, planned with the knowledge of a leading political party.
In a tweet, State Minister Wickramaratne said he wrote to the EC Chairman, the opposition and the IGP on the message he received. This message had indicated that a bomb blast had been planned by a certain group with the knowledge of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
He had said in his letter addressed to the EC Chairman that Twitter indicated the attack to have been planned with the knowledge of the SLPP. “The podujana party is planning a bomb blast next week,” he said in his letter.
“I believe the warning is connected to the forthcoming presidential election and I am referring the same in order to take action in this regard,” he said.
Sources close to Mr. Wickramaratne said he had called for investigations as he thought it was appropriate to inform the police and the Elections Commission to take precautionary measures. “The State Minister has informed the IGP and the Elections Commission as precautionary measures,” sources said.
Several others including Minister Harin Fernando and Non-Cabinet Ministers Harsha de Silva and Ajith P. Perera received the same tweet warning of an impending bomb blast.
However, Dr. de Silva and Non-Cabinet Minister Perera said they were unaware of the message. Minister Harin Fernando was unavailable for comment last night. (Yohan Perera)
