The SLPP yesterday rejected the complaint made by State Minister Eran Wickramaratne based on a tweet that SLPP was planning a bomb attack in the coming week.
Issuing a letter to the Elections Commission Chairman, SLPP presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa's spokesman MP Dullas Alahapperuma said it was unacceptable to make such allegations against the SLPP based on a Twitter message.
“We don't have to remind you Mr. Chairman, that the UNP resorted to violence to win elections in the past. State Minister Wickramaratne, who is a part of the government which neglected intelligence reports over the Easter Sunday attack, getting all worked up over a Twitter message in this way is astonishing and comical at the same time," MP Alahapperuma said.
Therefore, he said it was doubtful whether a conspiracy was being hatched to prevent a victory of Mr. Rajapaksa at the presidential election.
“People remember how President Ranasinghe Premadasa unleashed violence in 1988 to make way for his victory. We are uncertain whether this conspiracy is also such an attempt. We request Mr. Chairman's leadership in thwarting such efforts," he said.
He said terrorism should be defeated to preserve democracy. "We pledge our assistance yet again to your efforts in ensuring a healthy election," MP Alahapperuma said in the letter. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
