FR filed seeking immediate LG polls

A Fundamental Rights petition has been filed by the representatives of the 18 Local Government bodies in the Matara and the Galle Districts in Supreme Court today seeking the Supreme Court to order that the Local Election to be held immediately.

The petitioners claimed that the time of the Local Government bodies in the Matara and Galle Districts had expired; therefore the immediate election should be put in order.

The petitioners have stated 24 respondents along with the Elections Commission in the petition. The petitioners also seek Supreme Court’s direct order on the Elections Commission to begin Local Government Elections immediately. (Shehan Chamika Silva)
