Fishing communities cautioned over cyclonic storm

Colombo, May 24 (Daily Mirror) - A looming cyclonic storm poses a significant threat to the South-Eastern Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal areas, prompting urgent warnings to naval and fishing communities to exercise extreme caution. 

The low-pressure area over the South-West Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, now centered near 15.0°N and 88.4°E as of 05:30 a.m. today.

According to the latest forecasts by meteorological authorities, the depression is anticipated to continue its North-Eastward trajectory, consolidating into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by 05:30 a.m. tomorrow, May 25, 2024. Subsequently, it is expected to track northwards, intensifying further into a severe cyclonic storm over the same region by 11:30 p.m. tomorrow.

The impending weather system is predicted to bring very strong winds ranging from 60-70 kmph, coupled with heavy rainfall and very rough seas, particularly affecting the sea areas surrounding the country, as well as the South-Eastern Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
