Five new records broken on day one of Junior National Athletics

Five new records were set at the 63rd Junior Nationals Athletic Championship 2023 which began today.

The Junior National Athletic Championship conducted by Sri Lanka Athletic (SLA) will continue till April 10 at Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex, Diyagama.

Two boys who set new records were Asian youth silver medallist Thushen Silva of Maris Stella College, Negombo in the Under-18 Boys Pole Vault clearing 4.50 metres improving on the previous record of 4.40m while U.M.S. Sandeepa of Ambagamuwa CC, Ambagamuwa clocked 40.55 seconds in the Under-16 Boys 300m hurdles eclipsing the previous record of 40.56.

The other three records set by girls were from D.S. Kahangama of Mahamaya Girls Schools, Kandy in the Under-20 Girls 100m hurdle of 14.45 shattering the previous record of 14.53, D.B.S.L. Dissanayaka of Swarnamali Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy in the Under-23 Girls 100m hurdles clocking 14.51 eclipsing the previous record of 14.53 and U.M.S. Himashani of Ambagamuwa CC, Ambagamuwa in the Under-16 Girls 300m hurdles returning a time of 47.30 smashing the previous record of 47.52. By: Susil Premala
