The government removed the recently imposed price control over essential goods such as flour, milk powder, cement and domestic cooking gas, Co-operative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna said.
He told the Daily Mirror that the decision was made following a special meeting held yesterday chaired by the President.
"The President also advised not to pressurise the public by increasing the prices of these essentials indiscriminately" he said.
If the manufacturers increase the prices haphazardly, then the government has to interfere with the prices again.
Therefore, it is in the hands of the manufacturers and dealers to maintain the prices at a stable level, he said. A gazette notification will be issued by tomorrow announcing this, he added. (CHATURANGA SAMARAWICKRAMA)
