Former NMRA CEO arrested

The former Chief Executive Officer of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) Dr. Vijith Gunasekera has been arrested.

He was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department after recording an almost 10 hour long statement with regard to the importation of substandard medicines to the country.

Earlier, Dr. Vijith Gunasekera was removed from the post of CEO on a decision by the NMRA Board of Directors over the allegations on the import of substandard medicines to the country and allegedly shredding a series of confidential, sensitive NMRA official documents.
