General strike brought partial success

The General strike which was called by trade unions have yielded only partial success as only 44,540 public servants out of 148,451 in six provinces have participated in it, according to a government survey.

Accordingly, 36% of the workers have engaged in the strike in the North Western province, 40% in North Central, 49% in the Southern province, 25% in Central, 21%  in Eastern, and 19% have engaged in the Uva province.

As per the data, government hospital doctors have participated in the strike to a higher extent.

Accordingly, 914 government doctors out of 1322 in the North Western Province, 434 out of 690 in North Central province, 1547 doctors out of 2472 in the Central province, 942 doctors out of 1339 in the southern province 454 doctors out of 1338 in the Eastern-Province and 730 doctors out of 918 in Uva province had engaged in the strike.

However, data in Southern, Sabaragamuwa and Western province were not available though the workers who participated in the strike in the Western province was reported to be high according to a spokesman from the President’s office.

National Organizer for National Trade Union Centre Wasantha Samarasinghe who commented on the strike said it was a success as walk out and protsts organized was a successful. “Our union workers who were attached to central Bank, other banks and many workers attached to other state institutions had engaged in the strike,” he told the Daily Mirror.
