Kathmandu, September 24 (Ratopati) —  Former President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa arrived in Kathmandu via Thimpu, Bhutan's capital yesterday.

He landed in Kathmandu on Monday morning and is staying at the Vivanta Hotel in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur. Rajapaksa arrived on the Druk Air flight number KB 400 at Tribhuvan International Airport.

According to SP Naresh Subedi of the Lalitpur District Police, security arrangements have been made for the events Rajapaksa will attend during his visit, which includes plans to travel to Chitwan as well.

On 13 July 2022, following a string of mammoth protests that eventually culminated in a civilian takeover of his official residence and workplace by protestors, Rajapaksa fled the country, accompanied by his spouse and a personal security detail, to the Maldives, before further retreating to Singapore on 14 July.

On 14 July, whilst in exile, Rajapaksa resigned the presidency, becoming the first Sri Lankan president to relinquish the office mid-term.
