The Director of Ministerial Security Division (MSD) SSP W. Thilakarathne yesterday told the Daily Mirror that the late politician Arumugam Thondaman’s son Jeevan Thondaman had been given MSD security following orders, they received, from government higher-ups.
He said this when the Daily Mirror inquired him about the written complaint filed by the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) against providing ministerial security for Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP) election candidate of Nuwara Eliya Jeevan Thondaman.
Thilakarathne said that he received directions from the government higher-ups, whom he declined to specify and according to the orders, two policemen of the MSD were assigned for Jeevan.
CMEV last Sunday (12) wrote to the Inspector General of Police, Election Commission and the Director of the MSD demanding them to inquire into how Jeevan was entitled to enjoy MSD security.
CMEV National Coordinator said all they want is to know whether Jeevan has been given MSD security following a proper security assessment report. He said even though he is just another election candidate, he could request special security if he has a potential security risk as the son of late politician Arumugam Thondaman.
However, he reiterated that such special MSD security should be given based on an assessment report.(Darshana Sanjeewa and Piyumi Fonseka)
