Parents can no longer bear the prevalent  transport cost to send their children to school and therefore the government should take immediate action to provide relief for children's education, Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin said.

Addressing the media, he said the schools were reopened from today and it was a good decision. The education of children shouldn't be destroyed just because the government is in crisis.

"Even though the schools were started today, certain schools saw only 50% students were present and some schools only 35%. Transport facilities should be enhanced to increase the number of children attending schools. For that, adequate fuel should be provided.

However, yesterday the government took a decision to provide fuel for school vans from the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) depots, he said. But most of the schoolchildren use public transport. Also, special attention should be paid as to how the teachers are travelling to school.

"Special attention should be paid to teachers on how they come to school." The CTU claimed that no program was implemented to provide fuel for teachers and principals, even though we requested for it, "Stalin said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
