Notwithstanding the control measures in place, the number of the highly contagious Omicron COVID variant has surpassed 100 cases in Sri Lanka, showcasing the variant’s higher transmissibility.

According to informed sources, Omicron began to spread in the community which becomes evident with several cases already detected from the community.

The tally of Omicron cases as of yesterday, (10) stood at 48. Health authorities are of the opinion that the number does not carry much weight as it doesn't reflect the real picture of the entire scenario in terms of Omicron spread in Sri Lanka.

However, analysing what Omicron could unfold and throw at us, local health experts have predicted that Omicron could outpace other variants and might even overtake the previously dominant Delta variant in Sri Lanka.

Commenting on the current situation, COVID-19 Coordinator Dr. Anwar Hamdani told the Daily Mirror that caseload has gradually decreased in last two weeks and so is the number of deaths.

"However, an Omicron-fueled wave might emerge if people fail to receive booster dose on due time and comply with health practices," he pointed out.

"Though spreadability of Omicron is high, its severity is comparatively lower. However, we cannot take the situation for granted as Omicron is spreading like wildfire in several European countries wreaking havoc," he stressed.

Therefore, Dr. Hamdani urged people to give priority to two things; i.e., wearing a face mask properly and getting the booster dose at the earliest. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
