The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) and the health trade unions lambasted the circular issued by the Health Secretary advising government employees to exercise caution when releasing statements to the media.
Commenting on the matter, GMOA media spokesman, Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe said, "This is a clear attempt by the government to suppress both health professionals and trade unions."
"The circular unfairly exacerbates the current issues, and therefore we strongly urge the health authorities to retract it," he added.
In addition, Ravi Kumudesh, the President of the Joint Council for Professions of Supplementary Medicine, issued a warning that strict action would be taken against the circular.
He emphasized that trade unions were prepared to retaliate if the circular was enforced arbitrarily within the corporate sector.
