While criticizing the move to provide luxury vehicles for ministers and MPs, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said yesterday that his party would never approve using public funds for the purpose.
"We in the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) condemn the proposal by the government to provide MPs with vehicles at taxpayers’ expense. We urge the government to ensure that these scarce public funds are utilized to provide vaccines for all Sri Lankans. SJB will never approve using public resources for the benefit of the politicians, but such resources should be invested in promoting a prosperous and developed motherland," Mr. Premadasa said in his latest post on Facebook.
Meanwhile, SJB MP Dr. Harsha de Silva proposed that funds which are to be spent on luxury vehicles should be used to purchase ambulances. "What the government should do is to use the funds that are spent on luxury vehicles to bring in more ambulances and generally to overcome the current pandemic," he said. (Yohan Perera)
