Colombo, October 4 (Daily Mirro) - There has been an increase in the number of children showing symptoms of influenza and doctors advise vulnerable groups to wear masks, Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) Consultant Pediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera said.
He said symptoms like respiratory problems, cough, cold, fever, runny nose, blocked nose and sometimes vomiting may occur.
Influenza is a viral infection that spreads particularly during the winter season in Western countries. Influenza viruses are categorized into types A, B, C and D, with types A and B being the most significant in terms of human disease. Influenza C is less common and typically causes milder respiratory infections, while influenza D is known to exclusively infect animals (mainly cattle) so far.
However, strains of influenza A and B can now be seen in Sri Lanka as well. Initially, influenza does not require treatment with antibiotics. Antibiotics may be prescribed if there are complications, such as secondary bacterial infections, but only under the supervision of a doctor.
Influenza can be severe in certain groups, particularly children under two and a half years old, individuals over 55, those with weakened immune systems, people with chronic respiratory diseases, asthma, diabetes, cancer patients and pregnant women.
Therefore, it is better to identify influenza early, before it spreads rapidly, especially among certain groups, such as preschool and school-aged children.
If a child appears ill within a group, antiviral medication can be given, but it is not necessary to treat the entire group.
This influenza situation can spread through droplets, so doctors have advised individuals with symptoms to wear masks to prevent spreading among others. A vaccine for this strain of influenza is available in other countries.
