Colombo, June 21 (Daily Mirror) - Increasing the representation of women in the political field without party differences will make it possible to create a country free from corruption and fraud, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.
While participating in an awareness programme about the projects organized to be implemented in the country in the future by the Ceylon Women Organization to empower Sri Lankan women, the Minister said that there are only 12 female representatives among the 225 MPs in Parliament.
"In the next five years, women's representation is expected to increase significantly, taking precedence in every field. Currently, women already form the majority in the administrative sector," he said.
Gender equality, recognized as the fifth point among the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved by countries worldwide, is at a very positive level in this country, he said.
"There are various issues related to this matter in many countries worldwide. Although challenges in girls' education are common, our country has set positive precedents for women's empowerment, even giving birth to the world's first female Prime Minister," he said.
