The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today commended the government for rejecting the establishment of hybrid courts as proposed by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and said setting up of hybrid courts would put the country into a trap.

JVP MP Bimal Ratnayake said justice would not be meted out to war victims by the setting up of such courts. He said that grievances of the war-affected could be resolved through a Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Speaking at the Committee Stage Debate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he said it was the government's responsibility to protect human rights.

"The government has no genuine intention to protect human rights. It is only working towards human rights targeting UNHRC sessions in Geneva," he said.(Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
