Due to the lack of "Naphtha" to operate the Kelanitissa Power Station (KPS), it might be disabled from tomorrow morning (13), Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Chairman Nalinda Ilangakoon said.

He said that the plant has enough naphtha to operate until tomorrow morning and also mentioned that the petroleum corporation is ready to give naphtha only for cash in hand.

He further said that the Electricity Board is negotiating with the authorities to find money to pay the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) to buy the naphtha needed to operate the plant.

If they can give some money this afternoon or so, the naphtha will be received.

KPS produces about 165 MW for the national electricity grid.

Meanwhile, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Engineers Union President Nihal Weeraratne said if the existing naphtha fuel stock is not sufficient to run the Kelanitissa combined cycle power plant, the power generation is likely to run out by midnight. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
