The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) today issued landslide early warnings for Matale and Galle districts.
Accordingly, people in Baddegama, Galle Four Gravetes, Akmeemana, Elpitiya, Niyagama, Bope Poddala and Ukuwela were asked to be watchful on sudden appearance of water sprouts, cracks on walls and on the soil as these may be signs of impending landslides.
Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department warned that certain rivers in the country could reach the spill level.
Accordingly, Mee-Oya, Deduru Oya, Attanagalu Oya, Kelani River, Kalu River, Bentara river, Ging river, Nilwala river, Kirama River and Uuru-boku Oya could reach spill level.
Moreover, Department of Meteorology forecast that prevailing showery condition in the South-western part of the country (particularly in Southern, Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces) is expected to continue further while very heavy falls above 200 mm were expected to occur at some places tonight.
“Showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere especially in Eastern, Uva and North-central provinces with isolated heavy falls about 100mm,” the department said. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
