The NBRO instructed people in the region to be on alert on the possibility of landslides, slope failures, rock falls, cut failures and ground subsidence and also to evacuate to a safe location if the need arises if the rain continued within next 24 hours.
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said the people living near the Kalu Ganga and Attanagalle Oya to be alert of rising water level.
They said a sluice gate of Laxapana reservoir was also opened today and those living downstream were advised to be vigilant.
The Meteorology Department said showers or thundershowers would occur in the Western, Central, Southern and Sabaragamuwa Provinces today.
It said heavy showers- more than 100 mm-could be expected at some places.
