Former President Maithripala Sirisena will continue to engage in active politics even after the general elections, Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s (SLFP) Senior Vice President Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa said yesterday.
He told media personnel that the former President had informed this during the last SLFP Central Committee meeting.
“He will remain as the Chairman of the SLFP in future as he does currently,” Prof. Piyadasa said.
“Mr. Sirisena has decided to remain silent during this interim government period. However, he will continue his active politics once this interim government is over,” Prof. Piyadasa said.
The former president decided to remain neutral and not participate in the then SLPP presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa's propaganda campaign after the SLFP officially announced its support to Mr. Rajapaksa.
The SLFP Central Committee recently decided to hand over the SLFP chairmanship to the former president who remained neutral during the presidential election period. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
