Samagi Jana Balawegaya parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakkara today filed a Fundamental Rights petition in Supreme Court seeking a declaration that appointment of former State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabraal as the Governor of the Central Bank by President has no legal effect.

The petitioner has cited Foreign Ministry Basil Rajapaksa, newly appointed Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Monitor Board of Central Bank, Secretary to the President P.B. Jayasundara and Attorney General as respondents.

The Petitioner states that Cabraal had been appointed with a view to further the political agenda of the ruling political party and thus done mala fide with collateral purposes and not made on the national interests and the interests of the public at large.

The Petitioner further stated that by the manner in which Ajith Nivard Cabraal has functioned during his previous tenure, he has proven that he lacks in competency, integrity and responsibility that is necessary to hold the office of the Governor of CBSL.  (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
