Colombo, December 10 (Daily Mirror) - Measures are underway by the Environment Ministry and the Ministry of Technology and Research to launch a long-term, scientific and sustainable solution to protect crops from being destroyed by wild animals, Cabinet spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa announced.

Addressing the media, he said that this issue must be handled sensitively. He noted that, according to statistics, the population of certain animal species has increased significantly, leading to practical challenges for people and their crops.

He added that the government is currently implementing a balanced approach to protect the livelihoods of people, the lives of wild animals and the environment.

Environmentalists and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) have the right to voice their opinions on allowing people to take action against animals damaging their crops. However, discussions are necessary to identify sustainable solutions.

The government is prioritising the challenges faced by farmers. Farmers are struggling to protect their crops from wild animals such as monkeys, peacocks and elephants. Reports indicate that some residents in affected areas have abandoned their homes due to the increasing threats by these animals.
