It was decided at the party leaders’ meeting held at the Parliamentary complex that no date could be given to debate the no confidence motion against Minister Rishad Bathiudeen in Parliament, MP Dinesh Gunawardena said.
Replying to the questions asked by journalists, he said Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella was in a firm position that a debate for the NCM could not be given at this stage but should appoint a select committee to review the NCM.
“The debate date might be fixed once the decision of the select committee was out,” MP Gunawardena said.
“Although we came out with our objection to what the Leader of the House proposed, the Speaker too stood by his decision,”
Moreover, we raised the point that the Speaker in his purview has the power to fix a debate date for the motion. However, it also became null and void at the meeting. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
