Colombo, Jan. (Daily Mirror)- NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his New Year message, said that the people must determined to make sure that this New Year and the future truly be a prosperous one without confining it only to New Year wishes.

"The challenges in the New Year are immense. The economic crisis which lashed out in 2022 is further aggravating. The Ranil-Rajapaksa government has put the entire burden on the people. The New Year 2024 dawns with the VAT increase which was enforced due to IMF conditions," he said.

He said new tax burden will result in the escalation of prices of essential commodities and the collapse of local industries and agricultural sector.

Dissanayake said rulers will sell off the country's assets apart from unbearable tax burden on the people due to failed Neo-Liberal economic policies and IMF conditions.

"This situation will compel the people to think whether to continue this 75-year long failed economic policy. This situation will also compel the people to think whether to tolerate this Neo-Liberal economic policy which is in force for 75 years and the corrupt political culture which has created on the said policy," the message added.

He said the inevitable presidential election as per the Constituion will give an ideal opportunity for the people to step into a new political and economic journey by rescuing the country from all distructions, crisises and combating all challenges.

Dissanayake urged everyone to come forward in the New Year to rewrite the country's history and to create a new society with economic freedom, social freedom and dignity by dispelling the sad and dark history.
