Due to the lack of junior employee at railways stations, the Station Masters have decided to refrain from delivering parcels from tomorrow onwards, the Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters' Union (SLSMU) said.
SLSMU Chief Secretary Kasun Chamara Jayasekera said the authorities had failed to provide solutions for the dearth of Junior employees. The union claimed that employees had been assigned duties continuously, violating international rules and regulations.
"Most of the stations require at least six employees whereas only one employee is assigned to all duties," it is said.
The authorities responsible and the political authority had been made aware of this matter following a meeting that was held on February 18, 2020. But the authorities had failed to provide any solutions.
"There are about 8,000 vacancies that exist at the Railway Department including nearly 3,500 vacancies at the transport sub-department attached to the department.
Therefore, the (SLSMU) had decided to refrain from the delivery of parcels beginning from tomorrow morning. (Chaturanga Smarawickrama)
