The government has no plans whatsoever to increase the prices of eggs and chicken in the future, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.
During a media briefing, he said that the import of eggs was a temporary measure to address shortages caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
He further stated that there are no plans to continue the imports in the future. The government's focus is to boost local egg and chicken production instead. By supporting and increasing local production, the government aims to ensure a steady and sustainable supply of eggs and chicken within the country, the Minister added.
"We have identified that there is an attempt to increase the prices of eggs, but we will not let them increase. We practice the same with chicken prices. I will not let the chicken prices to increase.
"We have recently become aware of potential attempts to increase the prices of eggs in the market," he said.
"However, rest assured that we are committed to preventing any such price hikes. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and take necessary actions to protect consumers from any unjustified increases in prices," Amaraweera assured. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
