Parents suspected of aiding and abetting rape

A police officer and his wife are suspected of aiding and abetting the rape of their 15-year-old daughter, the court was told.

The individual who raped the girl was produced before the Kebithigollewa District Judge and Magistrate Kasun Kanchana Dasanayake by the Wahalkada police and remanded till September 26. 

The 32-year-old suspect is a resident of the Padaviya area.

Police told court that the parents had allowed the suspect to rape the girl and had ignored her pregnancy and that she had attended school when she was six months pregnant. 

They informed the court that the police had initiated investigations on information received from the residents of the area by the Women and Children’s Bureau of the Wahalkada police.

Sergeant Dissanayake of the Wahalkada police who produced the suspect told court that the police had initiated investigations to arrest the girl’s father, a police officer, and her mother for aiding and abetting the crime and concealing it. 

He informed court that the JMO who examined the girl had confirmed that she was six months pregnant.
