The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) today said they would join the new alliance formed by Sajith Premadasa to contest the General Elections.
JHU General Secretary MP Patali Champika Ranawaka, SLMC Leader MP Rauff Hakeem, and TPA Leader Mano Ganesan said in a joint statement that they had decided to join the new alliance as they felt that a broad alliance was needed to defeat the present Government which had proved to be a failure, where people are concerned.
“We hold the responsibility of forming a broad alliance to contest the General Elections in a situation where the present government is going on a completely different direction rather than fulfilling people's expectations," the statement said.
"We made this move considering the decisions made by the UNP Working Committee to appoint Sajith Premadasa the leader of the new alliance, giving him the power to appoint a general secretary and to appoint him as the head of the nomination board," they said.
The leaders said they would commit themselves to form a new progressive government by defeating the current regime at the general election. (Yohan Perera)
