The Inspector-General of Police today informed the Court of Appeal that the alleged underworld figure Janith Madushanka alias ‘Podi Lassi’ is to be produced before a Magistrate's Court as soon as his detention order expires.
The IGP through the Attorney General informed the Court of Appeal that the detention order of Podi Lassie will be expired by December 15 and he will be produced before a Magistrate accordingly.
Podi Lassie had filed a Writ Petition seeking an order directing the authorities to ensure his security while being detained at Boossa Prison.
The petitioner had cited Boossa Prison Superintendent, Chief Jailor of the Boosa prison, Prison Commissioner General and the Attorney General as respondents in the petition.
Janith Madushanka had filed this writ petition through his lawyer seeking an order directing the prison authorities to provide adequate security.
The petitioner said that he is invoking Court's jurisdiction as there were serious threats to his life. The petition further stated that the respondents are duty-bound to ensure the safety of inmates who are held in prison custody.
Podi Lassi had been named as a suspect in a case filed against him over the death threats made in public at the Boossa Prison against the President, the Defence Secretary, and certain high-ranking officers of the Prisons Department. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
