COLOMBO (Daily Mirror) - Rajapakas are not the only perpetrators when it comes to the economic downturn that Sri Lanka has suffered, a senior UNPer said.
UNP Assistant Leader Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told a media briefing that one should not harp on the judgment given by the Supreme Court, where it held former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, former Minister Basil Rajapaksa and several others were responsible for the economic crisis.
“One should not come up with interpretations based on the judgment given, as there are others who are responsible for the economic crisis. There are those in other governments who are partly responsible for the economic crisis. Therefore, one should not try to make interpretations based on the recent judgment,” he said.
“Some concessions are given to the people in the budget for 2024, and more concessions will follow by mid-next year if everything goes well,” he assured.
Meanwhile, UNP Chairman and Member of Parliament Vajira Abeywardana, who participated in the second reading debate on the budget, also came up with a similar assurance.
“Everyone should back the President to take the country out of the current crisis,” he said.
