Ratmalana railway mechanical facility repairs 800 trains per year: Railways Dept

At least 650 minor and 150 major repairs are carried out annually at the Chief Mechanical Factory in Ratmalana, the Railways Department said.

Repairs were made to locomotives, compartments and wagons used for goods transportation, which have been in use for over 30 years.

In addition to these repairs, the old locomotives, power sets and compartments were completely restored, refurbished and put into operation, the department said.

They said Engineers and technicians are involved in the production of wooden re-furbished compartment with the aim of creating and promoting tourism as special projects.

The factory complex, which was established during the British rule in 1936, currently employs around 2,260 people, including engineers, technical officers and technicians.

Minister of Transport Pavithra Wanniarachchi visited the factory recently to inspect the day to day operations of the factory. She also met the employees of the factory and discussed about the problems they face.

Secretary to the Ministry Monty Ranatunga, General Manager of Railways Dhammika Jayasundara and a number of officials were present on the occasion. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
