Members of the UNP will hurriedly meet at 5:00 pm today to discuss possible disciplinary action against senior member Ravi Karunanayake, who has allegedly self-appointed himself to the national list of the New Democratic Front (NDF).
According to NDF sources, the party has won two national list seats, with plans to allocate one seat to the UNP and the other to the SLPP faction that aligned with former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The party was originally scheduled to meet tomorrow (19) to nominate the individuals who would enter Parliament from the NDF.
However, senior sources allege that Karunanayake’s secretary sent a letter to the Election Commission (EC), nominating Karunanayake for the national list without the UNP's consent.
Following media coverage of the incident, UNP members raised serious concerns with Wickremesinghe, urging disciplinary action against Karunanayake.
As a result, the UNP has scheduled an evening meeting to discuss the matter further.
Meanwhile, Karunanayake confirmed to the Daily Mirror that he has been nominated to the national list by the NDF.
When contacted, a senior EC official confirmed that Ravi Karunanayake’s name has been submitted to fill one of the NDF’s national list seats in Parliament.
