The National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection (NMCRP) requested people to refrain from buying Prima wheat flour to avoid increasing their product prices by Rs.12.

NMCRP Chairman Ranjith Withanage said that the sudden announcement to increase the price of Prima flour is illegal and not fair during this pandemic situation.

He said under section 20 (5) of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Act No. 9 of 2003, prior permission should be obtained from the CAA.

"An Extraordinary Gazette Notification under No. 1902/55 was issued on February 20, 2015 informing this. The CAA has not yet given permission to Prima company to increase the price of wheat flour and it is illegal to increase, "he said.

Therefore, the NMCRP urges all consumers not to buy wheat flour paying a higher price. If any trader is selling wheat flour at a higher price, make a complaint to the CAA through the 1977 emergency contact.

On previous occasions, Prima Flour Milling company had illegally increased the price of wheat flour, but following the CAA's intervention, the price increase was annulled.

Therefore, the CAA should enforce the law against the traders who sell wheat flour at higher prices, he said.

The maximum retail price of 1 kg of wheat flour is Rs. 87, Mr. Withanage reminded. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
