The leopard which was rescued after being trapped in a tree in Maskeliya died yesterday due to severe damages caused to its internal organs, Wildlife Department Director-General Chandana Sooriyabandara said.
The leopard was trapped in a tree on a land owned by the Gartmore Estate in Maskeliya near the Samanala Forest Reserve and was rescued by the Wildlife officers.
The animal was tranquilized after the rescue operation which lasted for nearly nine hours last afternoon, and taken to the Minipe Veterinary Hospital for further treatment.
However, it succumbed to injuries after being admitted to the hospital. The Director said the leopard had been in the tree for two days.
