Resolution to appoint select committee to probe channel 4 footage approved

The resolution to appoint a select committee to probe the allegations by the recent video footage broadcast by British Channel 4, was unanimously approved by Parliament today.

The resolution presented by 20 members of Parliament outlined that the select committee should probe the allegations by Channel 4, whether any politician had connections with any terror groups or whether there is any conspiracy as alleged by former Attorney General Dappula de Livera or whether there have been in any shortcomings pertaining to preventing the attack despite prior warnings.

The Speaker will appoint the Chairman and the members of the committee while it will have to submit its report within two months.

Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa proposed that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) be allowed to appoint a chairman for the committee and that an equal number of members from the ruling party and the opposition should represent the committee. 

“In addition to the proposals made by the National Catholic Committee to mete out justice to the Easter Sunday victims should be followed in the event of a fresh probe into the Easter Sunday attacks.

SJB MPs Niroshan Perera and Kavinda Jayawardene said they fully oppose the select committee and will not have anything to do with it. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
