Samagi Jana Balawegaya ( SJB) today opposed the gazette notification issued postponing the local government election and stressed that some kind of an election should be held to find out the people's stance.

The party also alleged the government had indirectly exposed its intention to conduct a referendum to extend its term by two years.

SJB MP Thushara Indunil Amarasena told a press conference that the government should go for either the local government or provincial council elections to find out people's opinion on the ruling party. "It is those in this government that lobbied relentlessly for an election while they were in the opposition. They themselves want the elections postponed today," MP Amarasena said.

"The Government indicated its intention to go for a referendum to extend its term by two years. However it is more advisable to go for an election so that one could read the pulse of the people," he added. (Yohan Perera)
