A Sri Lankan national returning from Dubai was nabbed by the police while attempting to smuggle in a stock of illicit cigarettes worth over Rs.2.1 million at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
The Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) officials at the BIA arrival terminal on suspicion searched the passenger to find 21, 400 sticks of Manchester and Gold Leaf branded cigarettes from his bags, which the sale and consumption is prohibited in Sri Lanka.
Following the preliminary inquiries, the police learnt that the suspect, a resident of Nattandiya area had been working as a chef in a restaurant in Dubai.
The suspect along with the contraband was to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate.(KURULU KOOJANA KARIYAKARAWANA)
