Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka for a two-day official visit on January 14, Foreign Ministry sources told Daily Mirror yesterday.
During his visit, the Russian leader is expected to meet President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.
As reported by Daily Mirror last week, Mr. Sergey's visit to Sri Lanka is deemed vital especially in the context of the upcoming UNHRC session at Geneva in February/March, where Russia's support will be crucial when the government makes a fresh presentation to the council which will lay down facts and figures of atrocities committed by the LTTE during the 30-year-long civil war.
The Daily Mirror learns that the upcoming UNHRC session will be included in discussions between the Russian Minister and Sri Lankan leaders.(Jamila Hussain)
