Sri Lanka has been able to control the spread of COVID-19 more successfully than any other powerful country in the world, Army Commander General Shavendra Silva said.
He said despite the current situation where around 500 patients being reported daily, spreading of the deadly virus in our country is kept under control, compared to other countries in the world.
“Around 500 COVID-19 patients are being reported in the country almost every day. But considering the global situation, we have to say without hesitation that COVID-19 is under control and the support of the people is vital to achieve this, the Commander said at an event in Matale, where he was present to unveil a special 'Hockey Mounument' on Saturday.
He said that people need to learn to live with coronavirus.
"We have to live with this. When we look at the global pandemic situation, where most powerful countries are going through great struggle to save their people. The highest number of deaths per day in the US was reported on Friday.
At a sort of difficult times the world is going through, we were able to control the pandemic here and we expect the support of the people to reap success in curbing the spread,” he said.
Meanwhile, the John Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Centre reported early Saturday that there are nearly 90 million COVID-19 cases worldwide.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
