SLAF deploys aircraft and drones to monitor traffic congestion in Colombo

A Bell 212 aircraft and drones of Sri Lanka Air Force have been used to monitor traffic congestion in Colombo in a joint operation with the Sri Lanka Police, the SLAF said.

Air Force Spokesman Dushan Wijesinghe said it was observed that heavy traffic congestion was reported in the Colombo area after the travel restrictions in the island were lifted due to the Covid-19 epidemic.

He said President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has directed to monitor the situation and to take appropriate action to reduce the traffic congestion in Colombo and its suburbs.

Accordingly, on the instructions of the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sudharshana Pathirana, a Bell 212 helicopter was deployed to cover the entire Colombo area while surveillance operation was carried out near Lotus Roundabout, Ayurveda Roundabout, Diyatha Uyana, Panchikawatte, New Kelani Bridge and near Parliament using drones, the spokesman said.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
