The Education Ministry today instructed its officials to conduct a countrywide dengue prevention campaign in schools prior to the commencement of the O/L examination and again before the reopening of schools for the first term in 2020.

The Ministry said the officials had been advised to conduct cleaning programmes even on Sundays without disturbing the examinations.

“Instructions have been given to the provincial education directors, zonal education directors, principals of all teachers’ training colleges and colleges of education to take necessary measures to convert all schools into dengue-free zones,” the Ministry said in a media release.

“The Minister explained he had requested all principals, teachers, parents, past pupils associations and the people of the area to assist the students to clean the premises and those principals would be held responsible for the payment of fines imposed in the event any school is found to have dengue mosquito breeding grounds,” it said.

“The school premises should be cleaned before the new school term begins next year,” it said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
