Radiation that emit out of the sun is the main cause for the excessive heat which Sri Lanka is experiencing these days, the Department of Meteorology said today.

A spokesman for the Department of Meteorology said less clouds and winds are other reasons for the increased heat in Sri Lanka.

“These happenings are usual at this time of the year,” he added.

He said that Sri Lanka’s situation has no connection with the situation in Mumbai where 11 people have died.

However the Department released a warning of caution as increased heat may cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion when staying in the sun for a long time.

Heat could remain till Mid May this year according to the Department of Meteorology.

Maximum Temperature in several areas were high yesterday with Polonnaruwa recording a temperature of 36.6 C degrees C, Vavuniya 35 C degrees, Anuradhapura 34 C, Hambantota 33.8 C and Moneragala 33.9 C. (Yohan Perera)
