Speaker submits written complaint against threats on MPs

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has  submitted a written complaint to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) requesting an investigation into the posts published on social media threatening Members of Parliament, police said.

The Speaker informed the IGP that arrangements have been made by the Parliament to receive nominations tomorrow and to hold the poll on Wednesday to elect a President in accordance with the provisions of the Presidential Elections (Special Provisions) Act No. 2 of 1981.

Police said it is a punishable offense to improperly influence a Member of Parliament in any way accordingly to the said Act and the provisions of Parliament.

Police said the complaint letter has been forwarded to the DIG of the CID.

Accordingly, the Computer Crime Investigation Division has submitted the facts to the Hulftsdorp Magistrate's Court through a B report, and the investigations are being carried out promptly. 

Police said action will be taken against administrators of those who create, publish and circulate such threatening posts on social media. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
