Special unit to handle major disasters: Ruwan

The government is planning to set up a unit to handle special disaster situations under the Defence Ministry, State Minister f`or Defence Ruwan Wijewardene said yesterday.

Mr. Wijewardene said equipment such as special helicopters that could be used during such disaster situations, boats and other necessary items would be provided to this unit.

He also said personnel from the three forces would be specially trained in handling rescue operations and absorbed to this unit.(Yohan perera)
