The Acting IGP emphasised that the current government has made it clear that the law should be applied equally to all citizens, and he has communicated this directive to all officers.
Weerasuriya made these remarks during the inauguration of a new building at the Chunnakam Police Station in Jaffna.
He said that unlike previous post-election periods, which were often marked by violence, the aftermath of the last Presidential election saw no such incidents.
He attributed this positive change to the collective efforts of the community, the elected government and the empowerment of the police force to enforce the law effectively.
"The ability to implement the law is a reflection of our strength," Weerasuriya said. "If we fail to enforce the law, it reflects a weakness in both the institution and its leadership. However, we now have a favourable environment to carry out our duties without any external pressures," he said.
